Frowning, he said, "Not if I can help it, Terry."

Matilda glanced at her nephew, then back to the man towering over her. A faint hint of worry showed itself in the tight lines around her mouth.

Mike gave the horse a gentle nudge with his boot heel and the big animal sidestepped closer to Matilda. Leaning down, he said, "Will you stay with Terry until I get back?"

"Of course."

"Don't know how long I'll be," he warned and had to curl his fingers around the reins to keep from reaching out and touching her face. "You might have to spend the night at our place."
